Prenatal Chiropractic Care

Though pregnancy is an absolute gift and it is miraculous what our bodies can accomplish, it is also 9 months of trying to maintain your regular life while continuously making a human. No small feat!

During pregnancy, your body goes through an amazing amount of change to accommodate the baby. Besides the hormonal changes, the following physical changes could result in a misaligned spine or joints:

  • Protruding abdomen and resulting increased back curve
  • Pelvic changes
  • Postural adaptations

All of these changes can (and typically do) bring about pain and discomfort to the mother. Prenatal chiropractic spinal and pelvic adjustments have been shown to reduce or resolve certain discomforts such as back pain, hip pain, sciatica, and heartburn during pregnancy. Prenatal chiropractic care can also help assume optimal fetal positioning by assisting and guiding the pelvis to be more symmetrical; which in turn helps the uterus to be more symmetrical. One of the most sought after aspects of prenatal chiropractic care is the Webster Technique. Check out more information about the Webster Technique in our blog linked below!

Prenatal chiropractic and massage therapy can continue to ease this process by ensuring your body is able to communicate with itself effectively. This can speed up healing time and help combat depression which could be a result of additional hormone fluctuation as your body regulates. It is widely prescribed by Doulas as good practice to get your baby adjusted early since the birthing process is rough on their tiny bodies. Keeping them aligned has the same benefits regarding immune system strengthening and it’s been shown to help with fussiness in little ones!

As with everything, please check with your OB and/or Midwife before seeking prenatal massage therapy if you are considered high risk or have experienced bleeding. Also, make sure that your therapist is certified in prenatal massage as there are pressure points that could cause more harm than good during pregnancy. Our chiropractors administer a treatment that is considered gentle and noninvasive which makes it a great choice for pregnant women and children. Rotary based moves deliver a lot of force and we do not recommend them during pregnancy or infancy so please find a chiropractor who does not rely heavily on those types of adjustments for your prenatal treatment.
