With the advancement of technology and our on-the-go lifestyles, many people find themselves sitting most of the day. From long workdays in front of a computer to commuting to relaxing at the end of the day in front of the television, we have the opportunity to sit nearly all day. Many Chiropractors and other physicians have been teaching their patients that “sitting is the new smoking.” Reason being, smoking and inactivity are linked to the same chronic illnesses.
Why is this a problem?
Leading a sedentary lifestyle is associated with chronic health conditions such as obesity, diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, cancer, osteoporosis, depression, and anxiety. In fact, inactivity is correlated with hormonal imbalances, poor blood circulation, decreased immune function, loss of muscle strength and coordination, weight gain, and loss of bone density.
Spinal health and alignment is also affected by sitting, especially since most people are doing so for a prolonged period. While sitting the hips are in a flexed, or bent, position, which shortens muscles on the front part of the lower body and lengthens muscles on the back side. When shortened for long periods of time and day-after-day, the muscles in the front tighten and physiologically become shorter, while the muscles in the back disengage and become weaker. Some of these muscles attach to the low back. So when they shorten, they pull on structures in the low back and cause dysfunction. This dysfunction can lead to pain.
Also, most people do not sit with appropriate posture. Chronically sitting with poor posture changes the structure of the neck and back. Both are reasons to regularly get adjusted by a Doctor of Chiropractic on a regular basis.
What we do differently
At Moore Chiropractic in Olympia, Washington, our Chiropractors focus on the entire person, not just neck and back pain. We encourage patients to lead an active lifestyle to achieve optimal overall health. We also educate our patients on proper posture and ergonomic workstations, as well as prescribe corrective exercises to help our patients improve posture and resolve symptoms.
What you can do now
The World Health Organization recommends a minimum of 150 minutes of physical activity weekly for adults. Starting with walking is a great way to improve your physical fitness and reduce the amount of time you are sitting. Do not over think it!
You can also become mindful of your posture, especially while sitting. Are your feet flat on the floor? Are your knees bent at 90 degrees? Is your head over your shoulders or are you leaning forward and slumping? Are your shoulders relaxed or tense and pulled up toward your ears? Mindfulness regarding your posture is an easy first step to correct chronic poor posture.
